The Omnivore's 100

So thanks to my food studies list serv I discovered this random list of foods that I suppose is meant to challenge those of us who consider ourselves "well-eaten" (like well-read, you know). In the spirit of wasting some time (this is a sanity-saving device now that life is too busy for words), I'm going to just do it now. I found it here, and the genesis is traced from that blog on back to whoever came up with this nutty idea.

How It All Works:
1) Copy the list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating. I have to italicize b/c I don't know how to strike through on blogger...duh.
4) Optional: Post a comment at Very Good Taste, linking to your results

The 100
1. Venison
2. Nettle tea [I've had tea with nettles as a component, so I'm giving myself credit]

21. Heirloom tomatoes
22. Fresh wild berries
23. Foie gras

Fugu = poisonous (or potentially poisonous) blowfish eaten as sushi. One of those take-your-life-in-your-mouth things.

Umeboshi = pickled plum (Japanese)

Hare is much larger (and I assume much gamier) than rabbit; I don't know if you can get domesticated hare or if it always has to be hunted for dinner.

:) I haven't eaten MOST of the things on this list -- being a vegetarian, I can ease with honor out of eating head cheese and scorpions.

I guess I shouldn't be so surprised that other people have had curried goat...

Some of these things seem so common to me. I mean, sauerkraut was a staple in my house growing up.

Btw, Poutine = french friend with gravy and cheese curd. It's a Canadian specialty. Yay for being from northern NY.

If you meant french FRIES, then I've had something quite similar - it was called the "Magic Mountain" and it was available at a diner in Bettendorf, Iowa. It was a piece of texas toast, topped with ground beef, topped with fries, topped with cheese sauce, topped with onions. I believe you could get variations with chili and/or gravy as well. Mmmmmm.......the arteries thicken just thinking about it.

I did, in fact, mean fries. Even typing it then, I almost wrote "friend." The dish you describe sounds more like chili fries than poutine. Cheese curd is the key, really.

Just found your blog, and am enjoying reading it.

FYI, to strike things out on blogger, you < s > before what you want to strike out and < / s > at the end (minus the spaces inside the brackets). Hope that helps!
