To quote Romans 2, "Those people are on a dark spiral downward. BUt if you think that leaves you on the high ground where you can point your finger at others, think again. Every time you criticize someone, you condemn yourself. It takes one to know one. Judgmental criticism of others is a well-known way of escaping detection in your own crimes and misdemeanors..."
I'll stop there, but I just wanted to make this point -- whether we agree with our political leaders or despise everything they represent, there is nothing Christ-like about the kind of name-calling in this post, and it is not worthy of someone who is committed to Christian ministry.
Thanks for listening.
Oh, I didn't write it, and it wasn't written by a Christian. I just thought it was clever. Of course I hold myself to a different standard than I'd hold the author of this article, to whom Paul is not addressing his letter (since he's not a believer, as far as I know).
Also, we can't forget that the prophets, John the Baptist, and even Jesus did some namecalling in their day (brood of vipers, anyone?). Speaking out against corrupt leadership - even by using very strong language - has a long biblical and church history tradition. Let's not forget the power of prophetic calls to justice.
Perhaps it's not worthy of a pastor, but I don't know if that is my calling. I identify more with the OT prophets than Paul. And I think our times call for this.
In reply to comments by a Dominican at high post in Rome, Martin Luther had this to say:
"It seems to me that if the Romanists are so mad the only remedy remaining is for the emperor, the kings, the princes to gird themselves with force of arms to attack these pests of all the world and fight them, not with words, but with steel. If we punish thieves with the yoke, highwaymen with the sword, and heretics with fire, why do we not rather assault these monsters of perdition, these cardinals, these popes, and the whole swarm of the Roman Sodom, who corrupt youth and the Church of God? Why do we not rather assault them with arms and wash our hands in their blood?"
That sounds pretty judgemental, but then, Luther wasn't a Christian - oh wait, he WAS. But, he wasn't a pastor - oh, I guess he WAS THAT, too.
Sometimes, well placed and colorful rhetoric it an effective means of Christian communication against very bad people. ;-)
